Buddhist funeral rites and rituals are filled with religious significance for Buddhists. The rituals carried out during the Buddhist funeral are expected to set the person's soul free from the chains of life and enable it to find a new and better life after death where it gets closer to Moksha.

A Buddhist funeral consists of elaborate last rites performed according to sacrosanct rituals and traditions. Devout Buddhists believe that the soul is given freedom from the worldly cycle of life and death from the deceased’s mortal body during the funeral services and is able to find a new level and move to a higher plane of existence.

In a typical Buddhist funeral, the deceased’s body is cremated and Buddhist monks in the presence of the bereaved family carry out the funeral rites. After a person has breathed his last, the monks chant from the holy verses which are expected to free the soul’s positive energies. While the chanting is on, the deceased is made ready for the funeral and for friends and relatives to pay last respects, so that there is no decomposition even if the cremation is delayed. The body is washed and laid to rest in a coffin along with incense sticks, candles, flowers and a photograph of the deceased person.

If the funeral is deferred by some days for distant relatives to get a last look, the monks go to the deceased person’s residence daily and chant verses from the Abhidharma, an important Buddhist book.

On the day of the funeral, monks perform the last rites and their chief gives a brief speech in honour of the dead person highlighting his contributions in life and consoling the aggrieved family that death is destiny. The Pansakula, a significant ritual which is expected to carry blessings and positive energies to the soul of the departed is carried out during the final chanting while a white shroud is being wrapped around the casket.

Prior to cremation, a member of the family or the nearest kin is asked to make a brief speech about the deceased person. A special meal for all the visitors is organized after the Buddhist funeral ceremony and the cremation is done.

Although some variations in rituals can be seen, these are the general ritualistic procedures carried out during funeral service by followers in Thailand, Tibet, China and many other countries, where a huge number of Buddhists reside.
